The Theology Readers' Breakfast
By Randal Emery Pelton
One of my favorite disciple-making activities is the Theology Readers' Breakfast. It wasn't always a breakfast, but we've discovered that the early morning time slot works best for almost everyone. Currently, the TRB meets every other Thursday morning at 5:30 a.m. at a local restaurant. As one of the men described it, it's much like a book club in the sense that everyone arrives having read assigned pages for that morning. From 5:30-6:30 we eat and discuss the book, always with a view towards enhancing our faith in and obedience to Christ. I purposely attempt to choose books that will stretch all of us, which implies we won't always agree with the author. This kind of study forces us to think carefully about what we believe. In the past we've tackled books like Willard's, "The Divine Conspiracy", and Goldsworthy's, "According to Plan". Currently, we're reading Dembski's, "The End of Christianity: Finding a Good God in an Evil World". If you don't mind getting up early and you enjoy aggressive theological thinking, you might consider the TRB as part of your disciple-making routine.
